Why Pompeii is more famous
Fame came to Pompeii first: the Grand Tour, the casts everyone has seen, excavation on a grand scale from early on. Herculaneum lay under roughly 20 metres of hardened pyroclastic material, while Pompeii lay under far less, so digging here was harder and came later. Less famous does not mean lesser. The deep burial that delayed the archaeologists is exactly what preserved the town.
What Herculaneum kept that Pompeii lost
The deep, hot burial carbonized organic material instead of destroying it. Wooden furniture, doors, mezzanine floors, food, rope and the famous scrolls survived here as nowhere else, and mosaics are still on their walls rather than in a museum. In the boat houses on the old shoreline, more than 300 skeletons found from 1980 onwards are real human remains; Pompeii’s figures are plaster casts of voids. The eruption itself is a page of its own: what happened in 79 AD, and what is open to see today.
Visitors who do both tend to notice. Dorothée wrote that she “enjoyed visiting Herculaneum more than Pompeii”; Ulla called it “on par with Pompeii, perhaps even more exciting” with “no lines and almost no other tourists”; Ryan put it as “much better and less crowded than Pompeii”. I live here, so discount my bias and keep theirs.
Pick Pompeii if…
- You want the epic public buildings: amphitheatre, forum, theatres.
- You have four or more hours and the legs for a vast site.
- Seeing the famous casts matters to you.
Pick Herculaneum if…
- You dislike crowds. Expect roughly a quarter of Pompeii’s.
- You care about preservation: carbonized wood, upper storeys, mosaics in place.
- You have half a day, not a whole one, and want to use it well.
