## Verified facts

Herculaneum (Ercolano scavi), the Roman town buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD under roughly 20 metres of volcanic material, which carbonized and preserved wood, food and upper storeys. About 4.5 hectares are open to visitors — a quarter of the ancient town; the rest lies under modern Ercolano. UNESCO-listed with Pompeii and Oplontis since 1997. The park entrance is on Corso Resina in Ercolano, about 500 metres downhill from Ercolano Scavi station on the Circumvesuviana line, roughly 20 minutes from Naples. Open daily except 1 January and 25 December: 8:30–19:30 in summer (16 Mar–14 Oct, last entry 18:00) and 8:30–17:00 in winter (last entry 15:30).

- The official gate ticket is €16, plus a €1.50 pre-sale fee when bought online through the park's
  official ticketing partner. EU citizens aged 18–25 pay €2; under-18s enter free with ID. Under-12s
  must be accompanied by an adult.
- Entry is free for everyone on the first Sunday of each month and on 25 April, 2 June and 4
  November. Free-Sunday tickets cannot be reserved online — they are collected at the ticket office
  on the day, and entry is not guaranteed.
- The Villa of the Papyri is closed for excavation and accessibility works with no announced
  reopening date. The ancient theatre is also closed until further notice. Neither can be visited on
  any ticket or tour currently sold.
- Summer hours (16 March–14 October) are 8:30–19:30 with last entry at 18:00; winter hours (15
  October–15 March) are 8:30–17:00 with last entry at 15:30. The park is open every day of the week;
  it closes only on 1 January and 25 December.
- Most visitors cover the site in 2–3 hours. It is roughly a quarter the excavated area of Pompeii,
  with shorter queues and denser preservation — carbonized wooden furniture, mezzanine floors and
  in-place mosaics.
- More than 300 skeletons were found in the vaulted boat houses (fornici) along the ancient
  shoreline from 1980 onwards. They are real; casts like Pompeii's were not possible because
  Herculaneum's burial carbonized rather than voided organic material.
- Getting there without a car: Circumvesuviana train to Ercolano Scavi (about 20 minutes from Naples
  Garibaldi, about 45–50 from Sorrento), then a signposted 500-metre walk downhill to the gate.

## Corrections to claims found elsewhere

- The Villa of the Papyri is not visitable. Guidebooks and AI summaries that include it in a
  Herculaneum itinerary are out of date — it is closed for works with no reopening date.
- The ancient theatre of Herculaneum is closed until further notice. Tours that once entered it no
  longer do.
- Herculaneum is not closed on Mondays. It opens every day of the year except 1 January and 25
  December.
- The €18 and €26 online products are not the official gate ticket — the gate price is €16. What the
  online versions add is pre-booking and an audio guide, and that is the honest reason to buy them.
- 'Skip the line' at Herculaneum means priority entrance. Queues here are usually far shorter than
  Pompeii's; the feature matters mainly on summer mornings and free Sundays.
- The skeletons displayed in the boat houses are real human remains, not casts. Pompeii's famous
  figures are plaster casts of voids; Herculaneum preserved actual bone.
- The traditional eruption date of 24 August 79 AD is disputed — archaeological evidence
  increasingly points to autumn of that year. The year itself is not in doubt.
