When Is Herculaneum Free to Enter?

Free Entry
On the first Sunday of every month, plus 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Free for everyone, no reservation possible: you collect a free ticket at the ticket office that day, and on busy free days entry is not guaranteed. These are also the most crowded days of the month, which at a site people visit for its quiet is a real trade-off.

If your dates hand you a free Sunday, arrive for the 8:30 opening and go straight to the ticket office; by late morning the queue you saved €16 on can cost you the quiet the site is loved for. A free day changes the gate, nothing else: hours and last entry stay as listed on the planning page, and a guided tour still charges its normal price for the guiding. One caveat worth knowing: the private tour’s operator states plainly that free-entry days cannot be reserved and entry is not guaranteed, so I keep serious bookings on regular days.

Any other day of the month, the €18 pre-booked ticket below saves you the ticket-office stop.

Frequently asked questions

Is Herculaneum free on Sundays?

Only on the first Sunday of each month; the other Sundays are normal ticketed days. The national free dates are 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Everything else runs on standard pricing, listed on the tickets cost page.

Can I reserve a spot for a free Sunday?

No. Reservations are not possible on free days. You collect a free ticket at the office when you arrive, and entry is not guaranteed once the day fills up, so aim for the 8:30 opening.

Are guided tours still worth it on a free day?

The guiding is worth it any day, but note the private tour’s operator warns that free-entry days cannot be reserved and entry is not guaranteed. I book guided visits on regular days and keep free Sundays for repeat wanders.
